Phoenix Auto Accident Attorneys Discuss Rollover Accidents Seem To Be Increasing

As Phoenix auto accident attorneys, we were surprised to learn about yet another crash that occurred on Tuesday morning, January 10, 2012. According to a news report published in Fox 10, the 17-year-old driver lost control of his SUV, hit a curb and crashed, causing the SUV to roll over. Police have ruled out impairment. Luckily, the teen suffered only minor injuries. We wish him a full and quick recovery.

Causes of This Phoenix Auto Accident

This Phoenix auto accident occurred when the teenage driver lost control and hit a curb. Police still aren’t sure what caused him to lose control. In many cases, we see Arizona rollover auto accidents caused by other cars that swerve toward or sideswipe the car that ends up rolling. We also see faulty repairs that are to blame, such as poorly inflated or improperly installed tires, faulty steering mechanisms, fluids that aren’t filled correctly, and more. There may also have been debris in the road that caused the driver to swerve toward the curb. An unsafe lane change by another vehicle often causes a driver to auto correct and roll over as well.

Phoenix Auto Accident Statistics with Rollovers

As auto accident injury lawyers, we were happy to learn that 2009 marked the lowest number of accidents in 20 years. There were 22,713 accidents in the city that year, according to AZ Central. In 2010, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), there were 29,062, so unfortunately, that number rose from the record low. Sideswipe accidents accounted for nearly 15,000 accidents.

6 Seriously Injured in Marana Rollover Crash

A blown tire caused a car accident Saturday, sending six of its passengers to the hospital with serious injuries (ABC15 08/20/2011). According to report, the Chevy Astro van rolled over a number of times around 3:20 p.m. on Interstate 10 near the Marana exit.

Two of the victims were flown in critical condition while four more were transported by ambulance after suffering serious injuries.

The engine compartment was on fire after the crash but was contained with the help of a bystander who used a fire extinguisher to prevent the fire from spreading.

Motorists had to be detoured after the accident caused Westbound Interstate 10 to be closed for several hours.

Rollover accidents which have a high fatality rate usually involve tall and narrow vehicles such as SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks. This is because of the higher centers of gravity that these types of vehicle possess making them more susceptible to rollovers.

While the accident above was triggered by a blown tire, Safecar.gov has outlined the most common factors that can lead to rollover accidents. Three of those factors are as follows:

  • Speed – Being involved in 40 percent of fatal rollover accidents in the country; excessive speeding is one of the common causes of rollovers. Make sure that you travel within speed limits to avoid becoming a victim of a rollover.
  • Alcohol – Impaired driving accidents have been a problem for the longest time. Alcohol consumption may impair a driver’s senses making him susceptible to a crash and should be completely avoided before driving.
  • Location – Almost 75 percent of fatal rollover accidents happen in rural areas because of higher speed limits and undivided road structures.

Phoenix Rollover Seriously Injures 5

Rollover crashes are the deadliest of all types of crashes. Annually, an average of 10,000 people die from vehicle rollover accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rollover deaths in 2009 fell to 8,267. An estimate of 476 serious injuries is said to be prevented annually. Moreover, being ejected from the vehicle when not wearing a seatbelt attributes to a majority of rollover deaths. Almost 25% of fatal accidents are involved with vehicle ejection. Seatbelts will not reassure a 100% safety from crashes but it will minimize the impact. Some years prior to 2009, the overall rate of ejection in fatal crashes was only 2.5% for occupants who wore seatbelts compared to a whopping 29.4% for those who didn’t wear seatbelts.

In recent news, there was a two-vehicle rollover that occurred between Interstate 10 and 75th Avenue causing a temporary shutdown of both the east bound and west bound lanes (AZCentral 08/13/2011). Five people were ejected from both vehicles at 2:40 in the afternoon. These people sustained serious injuries. Further investigation will be done regarding this accident.

Rollovers are prone to happen with light vehicles and SUVs. Avoid conditions that will lead to loss of vehicle control like driving under the influence, drinking alcohol, speeding, etc. Always be careful on roads and avoid extreme steering of the wheels. Last but not the least, buckle up when out for a drive.

1 Killed in Rollover Crash Near Loop 101 and U.S. 60

Rollovers are among the most dangerous types of vehicle crashes because of a high incidence of occupant ejection and head injury. Rollover crashes account for approximately half of all single-vehicles as compared to multi-vehicle crashes. It is even 36% higher than those crashes with no rollovers. According to the FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System), a total of 8,296 or 35% of passenger vehicle occupants died in rollover crashes in 2009. More than 90% of rollover crashes of passenger vehicles are single types.

In recent news, a single-vehicle rollover caused an accident involving seven people on Loop 101, near
U.S. 60, with one dead, AZCentral reports Friday afternoon. Five adults and two teenagers were in the vehicle, five of which were ejected and the remaining two had to be extricated. Officials say the one who died was 40 years old while the other six survived without life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. when the driver lost control of his vehicle. The Arizona Police Department suspects it was tire failure that caused the accident. The northbound lanes were temporarily closed but were reopened at 3 p.m. the same day.

Factors that may also contribute to these rollover crashes would be reckless driving behavior, poor road design and vehicle type, with SUVs and light pickup trucks being the most prone to these type of crashes. Buyers should be always aware of the pros and cons of choosing a car to purchase.

Phoenix Tanker Truck Rollover Closes I-17

An early morning truck accident happened recently which caused both lanes of Interstate 17 at Dunlap Avenue to be closed for hours (AZ Family 07/01/2011). According to report, the rollover happened around 1:20 a.m. when a truck heading north lost control, flipping over the median wall and into the opposite lanes.

The truck was carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel and created a potentially explosive situation. Hazardous Materials crews were able to confirm a gas leak but not as much as expected. The leak reached both sides of the median but responding crews had it under control. Another tanker was used to transfer the fuel from the rolled over truck.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was already released from the hospital. No one else was reportedly hurt in the Phoenix truck accident.

It took hours before the lanes were reopened as Hazmat crews had to clean up the area and transfer the remaining fuel to another tanker.

Back in 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 3,215 large trucks were involved in fatal car accidents. Large trucks took up 7.1 percent of total vehicles that ended up in fatal crashes.

With the high fatality rate of rollover accidents, it is fortunate that the driver survived with only minor injuries and that no one else was hurt in the incident. Vehicles that are taller and narrower in size are at a greater risk of ending up in a rollover crash. To protect yourself from a rollover crash, make sure to follow appropriate speed limits as rollovers tend to involve excessive speeding.

Tuscon Rollover Kills Two

Rollover accidents are a type of crash that has a high fatality rate. Often, rollovers are associated with speeding which can cause drivers to lose control while turning. There are also certain types of vehicles that are more prone to rollovers. According to Safercar.gov, taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs, pickups, and vans, are at a higher risk of ending up in a rollover because of having higher centers of gravity.

In recent news, a car accident in Tuscon killed two men after their pickup truck rolled over on Interstate 19 early Monday (AZ Central 06/13/2011). According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened on northbound I-19 at the San Xavier off ramp at approximately 5:30 in the morning.

The vehicle lost control while turning on the northbound off ramp and hit the guard rail, going over it and rolled over resting on its side.

Investigators say the victims were not wearing safety restraints at the time of the fatal crash.

Aside from excessive speeding, alcohol has also been a big factor in past rollover accidents. According to Safercar.gov, alcohol is involved in nearly half of all fatal rollover crashes in the U.S.

2 People Seriously Injured in Phoenix Freeway Car Collision

Rollover accidents in Arizona contributed 18.9 percent of the States’ fatal car accidents in 2009.

A car crashes involving multiple cars and an overturned one occurred in Phoenix recently. The accident was so severe that it blocked multiple lanes and officials had to close off the freeway in Phoenix wherein the crash had occurred. However, at 3:15 the freeway was reopened. According to the spokesperson of the Phoenix Fire Department, the incident happened at about 12:45 noontime.

The vehicles involved in the wreck were mainly an SUV and other cars travelling on the southbound State Route 51 at Northern Avenue, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer.

The SUV was being driven by a woman who was 72 years of age, and her car was the one that rolled over multiple times until it came to a stop. During the roll over, the woman was ejected out of the car and because of this, she suffered fatal injuries and was taken to a trauma hospital in the area.

After her vehicle overturned, two other cars behind it collided with each other as the wreck rolled before them. A 50-year-old man, who was driving one of the vehicles, has incurred serious injuries and he later was brought to a hospital. The other driver did not receive any hospital treatment for his minor injuries.

When driving on such roads as a freeway, one must be alert and ready for anything. The drivers in the incident above must have never thought that a car could roll over right in front of them. One must always wear a seatbelt.

1 Dead from Crash in Maricopa

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death to people for people of every age and also causes millions of injuries each year. To prevent this, the simple act of buckling up with the seatbelt is considered one of the best ways to save lives and prevent injuries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that there were more than 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers treated in emergency departments as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2009.

A woman died from a tragic Arizona rollover crash in Maricopa (ABC15 05/21/2011). The accident was caused by a two-vehicle collision. It happened just before midnight on northbound State Route 347 at mile marker 176.6. The two vehicles, a Toyota and a Chevrolet, were travelling next to each other when the Toyota sideswiped the Chevrolet. The Toyota regained control, but the Chevrolet went through the median and rolled over. The driver of the Chevrolet was ejected from the car and she died at the scene.

The government has been telling people that seatbelts save lives. Even some states are currently pushing seatbelt laws. This is because wearing a seatbelt can reduce serious injuries and deaths in crashes by 50%. One should not depend entirely on the presence of an airbag because it is not a substitute for the seatbelt. Therefore, seatbelts are encouraged on every trip, no matter how short. Everyone in the car should buckle up, even those who are in the backseat.

Two Dead, Two More Hurt in Tucson Rollover Accident

A rollover leaves two people dead and two others injured about 20 miles south of Tucson (KPHO 5/15/2011). According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the accident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate 19. Injured victims were airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

Over the years, car accidents have become one of the major causes of deaths for people. Car accident deaths reach more than a million each year all over the world and leaving millions more injured (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This shows how road safety continues to be a global problem.

There are more alarming conclusions that the CDC has drawn out. According to their report, car accidents are expected to become the third most serious threat to human health by year 2020. Crashes have also become the leading cause death for people aged 15 to 29 years.

In the U.S., despite a very active campaign against road accidents, our roadways witness at least 30,000 deaths each year. In 2009, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that traffic deaths reached 33,808, which was actually the lowest in recent years.

Not surprisingly, 32 percent of these deaths involved an alcohol impaired driver despite a very vigilant force against drunk driving.
